An expedition of ornithological scientists to study red-listed bird species was organised for the first time on the Brekhovsky Islands of the Taymyr, as well as the Yara and Tanama rivers. The research is being carried out as part of Rosneft's biodiversity conservation programme called Tamura. The Company's Arctic Research Centre has ten expeditions planned for the next four years.
Rosneft is especially focused on preserving the unique ecosystem of the Taymyr Peninsula. The north of Krasnoyarsk region is an important area for studying the flora and fauna of the entire Russian north. The territory of the Brekhovsky Islands in the Yenisei River delta is a nesting and migratory stopover area for waterfowl. The study of bird habitat conditions is considered to be of high practical environmental and scientific importance.
Field work was carried out with the participation of specialists from the Severtsov Institute for Problems of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They travelled over 400 km in search of rare species listed in the Red Data Book during the expedition. There were discovered nests of peregrine falcon and red-breasted barnacle, and a total of 58 bird species were registered, including waterfowl common scoter and long-tailed duck, as well as common chiffchaff, redwing and dusky thrush.
As part of the Tamura programme, a field expedition to count wild reindeer was also launched in July in the western Taymir, with polar bear research and counting to follow. During research, specialists use a wide range of equipment, including polar aircraft with increased fuel reserves and sea and river vessels of various types.
Rosneft implements the most ambitious program for studying the Arctic region since Soviet times. More than 50 expeditions have already been carried out over 12 years, during which scientists have studied hydrometeorological, geological and biological peculiarities of the region. It has been the source of a unique body of information on Arctic climate, nature and wildlife.
