RN-Purneftegaz introduces an unmanned complex to control greenhouse gas levels

31 May 2021

RN-Purneftegaz, a production enterprise of Rosneft Oil Company, began using uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor greenhouse gas levels at oil and gas treatment, refining, and transportation facilities. Monitoring is performed using a remote laser scanner and a high-resolution video camera installed on UAVs. If deviations are detected, office study is performed in real time along with an air survey plan and heat map composition.

Monitoring will be conducted at 40 oil and gas treatment, processing and transportation facilities. More than 700 km of pipelines are to be inspected during the year. UAVs are twice as effective at monitoring greenhouse gases as manned aircraft. In addition, monitoring at remote, inaccessible production sites will be possible through the use of UAVs.

Preservation of the environment is an integral part of the corporate culture and business operations of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production.

RN-Purneftegaz has extensive experience in drone monitoring of oil and gas production facilities. Moreover, RN-Purneftegaz employees, together with the administrations of the Purovsky, Nadym and Krasnoselkupsky districts, conducted an area monitoring, unprecedented in its scale, which helped organise clean-up of 30 hectares of forest--an area comparable to 42 football fields. The amount of garbage collected was about 1,500 cubic metres of household waste, which equals approximately to 150 heavy-duty dump trucks.

Rosneft prioritises environmental protection and industrial safety. Rosneft has been implementing its comprehensive programme to reduce greenhouse gas emissions since 2019. The expansion of this programme, as well as the introduction of innovations, such as drones, laser and thermal imaging scanners, and ultrasonic detectors, have consistently contributed to minimising environmental impacts.

Note for Editors:

RN-Purneftegaz is one of the main oil and gas production hubs of Rosneft Oil Company in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. It operates at 12 license areas. The company has produced more than 260 million tons of oil during the development of the fields.
